The Egyptian-born international star Rami Malak tells Al-Mawed magazine: When I was young, I lived in an atmosphere at school that was different from the atmosphere and customs at home, but with time I adapted.
* I prepared for my role in Robot and my role in Papillon before I signed the contract because my inner feeling told me that I would play them.
The Egyptian-born international actor, Rami Malek, is currently showing his movie, PAPILLION, in US cinemas. The movie tells a true story that takes place in the early twentieth century. The movie is a large production and the story keeps the viewer engaged throughout the movie to follow the events. Rami Malek plays the lead role with another actor. In it, Rami Malek appears in a different way than in his previous movies, as he wears glasses and his hair is disheveled in most scenes.
I asked him why he accepted the role in this film, and he said that the role was very different from the other roles he had played, as in the film he had to wear strange prison clothes in strange prison places such as isolated remote islands, surrounded by sharks, and his role in it is subjected to torture, beatings and humiliation in a terrifying way, which required special and unusual acting, as very few people have experienced something like the man he played in the film, so acting in this film was one of the most important roles he had played, completely unlike the film he is acting in now, in this film he plays the role of an actor and singer, and although the two films are about events that actually happened, the difference in the type of role is very big, as the first is about an innocent prisoner sentenced to spend the rest of his life in prison on remote islands, and the second film is about the life and story of the famous artist FREDDIE MERCURY and his life in front of the screen and the stage and his private life until his death at an early age.
I asked him about his friend "Sam Esmail" who produced the series MR. ROBBOT which won many awards and in which "Rami Malak" played the lead role in the series, he said that "Sam Esmail" is continuing his cinematic work and his latest film will be released soon and its name is Homecoming.
I asked him about his work in acting and whether this changed his lifestyle. He said that his life now follows his work, which is traveling from one country to another. Continuous travel around the world is exhausting and all of it is a requirement of acting and according to the roles he plays. He must prepare himself and study the roles in order to be ready in front of the camera when filming. This is not only for travel, but also for makeup, physical movements, and the face as well.
I asked him about how he worked in the field of cinema and how he got these different roles, and he said: “For me - and I am speaking only about myself - I do not guarantee anything or any cinematic acting work until I sign the contract and then I know that I will play the role in the film, but I have a strong feeling that I will be in demand to act in several films, and this is what happened to me, for example, in the series ROBBOT and Papillon, and I was trying to prepare for these roles even if I did not have a contract, but the feeling and sense that I would win the role was present in me - for example, when I acted in the series ROBBOT, I was acting this role in myself and repeating the words and topics of the story before signing the contract and even before I was sure whether the series would be implemented or not, and I traveled at my own expense to London, hoping to recover the expenses when I act in the series, and luckily for me, I won the role and also received several awards for my acting in this series.”
I asked him how he felt working here in America, even though he is of Egyptian origin. He said: “This is very strange. When I was in school here in America, I felt like I was a person. Then I went home and felt like I was in a completely different atmosphere and climate than school, in terms of language, food, and character. But with time, I adapted and learned how to live in both the atmosphere of school and the atmosphere of home.”
I asked him about the clothes he had to wear and the chains that were around his hands and feet in the movie Papillon. He said that the clothes were strange and funny now, of course, but they were not to his “mood.” What really bothered him were the chains that they put around his feet and hands and that he had to walk with.
