International star Matt Damon tells Al-Mawed: Ben Affleck and I have been friends since childhood and we will act together soon.
I choose my film stories from real life stories.
I encourage the production of parts of successful films.
Some of my ancestors are of Scandinavian origin.
My daughter loves studying photography and directing.
The star "Matt Damon" came to our meeting wearing simple clothes, a dark blue shirt and very ordinary jeans, and he looked of course different from what we are used to seeing him in movies, where he appears in clothes that suit the role he plays.
My meeting with the star "Matt Damon" was in Las Vegas, a unique city whose slogan is "WHAT HAPPENS IN LAS VEGAS STAYS IN LAS VEGAS". That is, what happens in Las Vegas stays here and should not be disclosed to anyone else at all. This city is unparalleled in the world, as its economy depends on gambling and it is famous for the beauty of its women, as a large number of beauty pageants are held in the city, including MISS UNIVERSE. Of course, Matt Damon's words about "what happens in Las Vegas stays in Las Vegas" are a reference to our conversation, and he knows very well that I am a journalist and that his words will be published, so I told him, of course, that what he will tell me will stay in "Las Vegas", meaning that I will not publish it, and he knows very well that I am also joking and that what he tells me will go beyond the borders of the city of "Las Vegas".
I asked him how he chooses the roles he plays, as he is distinguished by choosing the stories and novels he acts in. He said that in his personal life, many events occur to characters or people around him and attract his attention. When they present stories to him, he chooses roles that he has experienced or roles that are similar to what happened to his friends or acquaintances. This makes it easier for him to embody the character in the film, as he went through this stage in his life. Of course, the story must be enjoyable and arouse the audience’s passion, as this is the backbone of the film, no matter how high-level the acting and directing are. He continued by saying that he always likes the story in the film to revolve around reality so that its events resemble important events that have recently occurred and are still in the mind of the viewer, such as a revolution somewhere, a coup, or a severe earthquake that claimed the lives of a large number of people, each of whom has a story that the audience is interested in knowing, and so on, with some changes, so that the story becomes unique and enjoyable.
I asked him about his opinion on making sequels to successful films, and he said that making sequels is something he would like to do if the producer accepts it, and this is of course based on the revenues of the main film and the audience’s interest in it, as making sequels to a successful film has a great advantage, as the viewer expects a film at the same level as the main film, and this is what happened in the “Jason Bourne” films, as they achieved great success, and now they are even thinking of making another film with the same name as a continuation of the original series.
I told him that he was about to act in a movie in Norway, so how could he bear the fatigue of acting in a country like Greece, then in Serbia, then elsewhere, and now in Norway? He said that he would like to see other countries on this earth, and he told me that some of his ancestors are of Scandinavian origin from Finland and Sweden, and he wants to see Norway and visit the places where there are bears in nature and the snow that extends along the coast, and he will take his children and wife with him, and he hopes that they will spend a beautiful time there.
I asked him about his friend Ben Affleck, who is known to be childhood friends and are from the same city and state in America. He said, "Yes, we are still close friends. We grew up together and entered the movie industry together. We visit each other and even our children play together a lot whenever we get the chance." I asked him if they will act in a movie together soon. He said, "We are trying to do that and we will most likely succeed in acting together soon, but the details are still being implemented and you will know about that soon."
I told him that the first movie he acted in with his childhood friend Ben Affleck was in 1997 and it was very successful and that the movie pushed them both forward strongly, so he said that their friendship goes beyond cinematic work, although their passion for cinematic art linked this friendship more, and Matt Damon confirmed: “I would love to play the lead role in any movie directed by Ben Affleck, but I couldn’t because in his movies he always keeps the first role in the story for himself, but I will surprise him one day and steal the lead role from him!”
Matt Damon is known for his love of sports cars. His first salary was when he starred in his first movie with Ben Affleck. They each received $300,000 and went and bought a new Jeep.
The conversation touched on the work of films, from production and directing to the story and acting. I told him that in most of the films he acts in, did he have an opinion on the other roles? He said yes, and that even if he plays the lead role in a film, the success of the film is often a joint effort by the producer, director and writer. “We all put our ideas together as a group. Each of us contributes his opinions, talents and ideas to the success of the film. No one person is responsible for the story appearing at the appropriate level. Each of us has a specialty, but our specialty includes all aspects of the film, even in filming. Each of us expresses his opinion, then we focus on what is best in terms of its acceptance by the audience. For example, a film directed at children during the holiday season has a very different story and acting than a film directed at adults, such as “cowboy” or war films.”
I asked him about his children and whether they wanted to work in cinema. He said: “Yes, one, and she is the eldest of my daughters (he says she is his daughter, but she is his adopted daughter, meaning she is the daughter of his current wife from her first husband before her marriage to Matt Damon in 2005). She loves to study photography and directing, not acting. When she is with us, she goes and talks to the photographers and everyone behind the camera. I hope she succeeds in her artistic career.”
