Mahmoud Yassin and charity work
The late great star Mahmoud Yassin was a hero for many years in Egyptian cinema. The number of films he starred in was about 150 films, and he also starred in many television, radio and theatrical works. In an interview with Nora magazine in 1992, he talked about an aspect of his life as the head of the Giza Artists and Writers Association, saying: “The public has given me a lot and I must return the favor, or some of the favor. The Giza Artists and Writers Association includes among its members the elite of writers, intellectuals and artists, and its goals are social, cultural, artistic and humanitarian. In the previous month of Ramadan, for example, we visited four public hospitals and presented gifts and donations from the association’s fund to needy patients, in addition to medical equipment.
We agreed with a number of other hospitals to supply medical equipment as donations. I believe that the artist must contribute with a humanitarian and social effort, and no one should make excuses for lack of time. I personally was able to organize my time between my private work, the National Theater, and supervising my children’s lessons. I also found time for social service through the association.”
